Echinopsis spachiana - Torch Cactus
Torch Cactus (Echinopsis spachiana) (Friedrich & Rowley): A tall, columnar cactus with short, golden spines that turn white with age. The stems have 10-15 low ribs lined with large, woolly areoles. This species is native to western Argentina where it can grow to 7.0' tall, though it will stay small as a potted window sill cactus. As it grows, it can sprout new stems from its base and bloom with large white flowers up to 6.0" wide that open at night.
This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
