Othonna capensis 'Ruby Necklace' [large]

'Ruby Necklace' (Othonna capensis): An eye-catcher of a trailing variety with pudgy, bean-shaped leaves that hang on stems up to 2.0' long. The whole plant can flush a striking shade of magenta when moderately stressed by direct sun, drought, or cool temperatures (around 50F). It grows fine, white tufts of fuzz in the crevices between stems and leaves (don't worry, it's not mealybug!). It produces small, yellow, daisy-like blooms and re-roots easily from stem cuttings. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" round, plastic pot.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
